Dr. Peter Daly, an orthopedic surgeon from Minnesota, came up for the idea for the Holy Family Surgery Center a few years ago. Daly and his family were visiting Rancho Santa Fe for the first time when they met Angela, a then 10-year old with severely deformed legs.

Angela needed a series of corrective surgeries, but the waiting list to have the procedures at a hospital in Tegucigalpa was years long. So Dr. Daly arranged to perform the surgery in St. Paul, Minnesota and Angela spent almost a year recovering there, living with the Daly’s in their home.

Angela came through the surgeries with flying colors and after lots of hard work and physical therapy is able to run and play along with her peers at the Ranch. But her case started Dr. Daly thinking about all of the others who needed surgeries but could not afford the cost or the wait to have a procedure.

“I thought if we just had a permanent outpatient surgery facility to complement the existing external clinic here on the Honduras NPH site, we could deliver a lot more health care to people away from the bottleneck that exists in the capitol,” says Daly.

After floating the concept around to friends and colleagues, the idea took off and the Daly’s raised the money to build the center and was also able to secure truckloads of donated equipment and supplies.

The design and flow of the building is similar to Daly’s clinic back in Minnesota and the center has much of the modern technology that is common in US Operating rooms. But while visiting medical professionals will play a large role in its operation, Daly’s vision is also to use it as a training ground for Honduran surgeons.

“I think for us just to do things and go home, it just doesn’t enhance the level of everyday health care delivery here,” says Daly. He has already established a connection with two Tegucigalpa area hospitals, hoping to set up a partnership with their surgical teams.

“What I envision is for these medical brigades to be down here doing cases and have it well planned in advance so that the local Honduran surgeons can do it with us,” says Daly. “That way we can collaborate with them, and they can use this facility on a more full-time basis.”
